Spiritual care is a relationship in which a counselor (priest, religious, or lay person) helps a person being cared for to better direct their life and choices according to the Spirit of Jesus Christ.
Spiritual care takes various forms depending on the person, the stages of life, and the setting in which it is provided: occasional encounters, regular meetings.
This spiritual care consists of:
Welcoming someone as they are and as they present themselves, without judging them. Listen to what they say about themselves and their lives: their joys, their plans, their prayers, their doubts, their difficulties, their questions, their fears…
Help them sort through their thoughts and reactions, see what is most important, discern what is positive and what is negative… Thus, help them prepare decisions, big or small, that allow them to move forward according to the Gospel. The guide does not decide for the other person, but can help them be clear about themselves before making a decision.
Suggest ways for human and spiritual growth: a rhythm of life, prayer practice, reading, a tailored retreat, new approaches…
